Interactions:
Many tinctures contain high levels of alcohol and may cause nausea or vomiting when taken with metronidazole (Flagyl®) or disulfiram (Antabuse®).
Andrographis may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin (Coumadin), or antiplatelet drugs, such as clopidogrel (Plavix). Your blood may need to be monitored carefully if you take these together. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil), should also be used cautiously with andrographis. Andrographis use should be stopped before some surgeries; discuss this with a health care professional.
Andrographis may lower blood pressure. Patients taking blood pressure drugs should be monitored closely by a health care professional while using andrographis. Dosing adjustments may be necessary.
Andrographis may lower blood sugar levels. Patients taking oral drugs for diabetes or using insulin should be monitored closely by a health care professional while using andrographis. Dosing adjustments may be necessary. Andrographis may have mast-cell stabilizing activity and may interact or add to the effects of other drugs used for some allergies or asthma. Anti-inflammatories, antineoplastics, anti-virals and immunomodulators may interact with andrographis
There are no other known interactions; however, with the proliferation of available drugs it is always advisable to consult your doctor or health care professional before taking this or any other supplements.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Not recommended. It is therefore always advisable to consult with your doctor or herbal practitioner before taking any medication or supplements.
- Abortifacient (can abort pregnancy… although Ayervedic tradition allows it to be taken for short duration during pregnancy. We advise all women to avoid its use during pregnancy as a precaution. In almost every other respect Andrographis has an extremely low toxicity.)
